Ethernet Cables

An Ethernet cable is a common type of network cable used with wired networks. Ethernet cables are used for network connection to connect devices such as PCs, routers, and switches with Local Area Network. Ethernet cables help in easy communication between electronic equipment.

For different jobs, there is a variety of Ethernet cable that can be used for different things.

Whether you're looking for length or bandwidth, here are the best Ethernet cables to fulfil your networking requirements:

  • Cat 5
  • Cat 5e
  • Cat 6
  • Cat 6a
  • Cat 7

The commonly used network cables: Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, Cat7 all have different levels of performance, and therefore it is necessary to buy or select the right cable for the right application.

Now, let's discuss them one by one:

1. Cat5:

This network cable is widely used for 100Base-T and 1000Base-T networks as it provides performance to allow data at 100 Mbps and slightly more (125 MHz for 1000Base-T) Ethernet. The Cat 5 cable superseded the Cat 3 version and for many years, it became the standard for Ethernet cabling. This cable is now obsolete and therefore it is not recommended for new installations.

2. Cat5e:

These cables have a slightly higher frequency specification than Cat5 cables as the performance extends up to 125 Mbps in Cat5e.

Cat5e Cables can be used for 100Base-T and 1000Base-t (Gigabit Ethernet). Cat5e is an enhanced form of Cat5 cable and is manufactured to higher specifications although physically the same as Cat5. To perform at high speeds, these cables are tested for higher specifications. These twisted pairs within the network cables tend to have the same level of twisting as the Cat5 cables.

3. Cat 6a:

This cable is defined in TIA/EIA-568-B provides a significant improvement in performance over Cat5 and Cat5e.

While manufacturing Cat6 cables, these are more tightly wound than either of the Cat5 or Cat5e cables. These cables have an outer foil or braided shielding and shielding helps to prevent crosstalk and noise interference and also protects the twisted pairs of wire inside the Ethernet cables.

4. Cat6e:

Cat6e cables are manufactured to maintain higher transmission speeds over longer network cable lengths and can support twice the maximum bandwidth of any other cables. These cables mainly utilise shields which are sufficient to all but can eliminate the crosstalk. Thus, it makes it less flexible than Cat 6 cables.

5. Cat 7:

Cat 7 cables support high-speed Ethernet communication up to 10 Gbps. These are backwards compatible with Cat6, Cat5, and Cat5e categories. It helps to comprise four individually shielded pairs inside an overall shield. These cables are used for the applications where transmission of frequencies is above 600 Mbps.

Buying Ethernet cable is not always as easy as it might seem. There is a huge selection of network cables of different types; Cat5, Cat5e, Cat 6, Cat 6e and Cat7, as well as different lengths colours and the like. These are available from a variety of different suppliers. Hopefully, this blog has helped you find the best Ethernet cable for your home or office network.
