Different Types of Network Cables Used in Communication

Networking cables

Network cables can be used to connect one device to another with more computers to share printers, scanners, etc. With the advancement in networking technology, there is a change in the physical medium that devices use to transfer data. Networking cables are the medium to transfer data from one device to another.

Several cables are used as network cables. Some of them are as follows:

1. Twisted-pair cables:

A twisted pair cable is composed of two separate insulated copper wires, which are twisted together and run in parallel to each other.

These cables are widely used in various kinds of data and voice infrastructures. It helps to reduce crosstalk or electromagnetic induction between pairs of wires. There are mainly two types to twisted pair cables i.e. Unshielded Twisted Pair( UTP ) and Shielded Twisted Pair(STP).

  1. Shielded twisted cables: These cables are generally a special kind of copper telephone wiring used in business installations.
  2. Unshielded twisted cables: These cables are surrounded by an outer jacket and have no metallic shield. This makes the cable small in diameter but unprotected against an electrical barrier.

2. Optical fibre cables:

Optical fibre cables are mainly designed for long-distance, with high-performance data networking, and telecommunications. Optical fibre cables are created for long-distances, high-performance data networking, and telecommunications.

These cables are used to carry digital data signals in the form of light to travel distances up to hundreds of miles with higher throughput rates than those achievable via electrical communication cables.

3. Co-axial cables:

Co-axial cables is mainly a copper cable that is uniquely manufactured with a metal shield and other elements are designed to stop the signal hinderance. It is generally used by cable TV companies to connect their satellite signals to customer homes and businesses. Telephone companies sometimes connect telephone poles to their nearby customer offices with the help of these cables.

The metal guard prevents outer obstacles from motors, fluorescent lights, and other computers.

As compared to the twisted pair cables, it has a great capacity to cover more distances of network devices. There are mainly two types of coaxial cables i.e. thin and thick coaxial cable.

4. Ethernet Cables:

An Ethernet cable is one of the most common kinds of network cable used on wired networks. Various cables are used for carrying Ethernet, and currently, most common types of Ethernet cables include Cat 5, Cat5e, and Cat 6, Cat6a, etc.

Using WiFi is more convenient than a wired Ethernet cable, but Ethernet still offers advantages in terms of faster speed, less interference, less latency and increased security which are discussed as follows.

  • Faster Speed
  • Less Latency
  • Less Interference
  • Security
